Chicago Public Schools to Hold Back-to-School Events

Springfield, Illinois —State Senator Tony Munoz (D-Chicago) is announcing that Chicago Public Schools (CPS) will hold three back-to-school festivals throughout the Chicago region through the end of August.

These back-to-school festivals will be a chance for students and families to celebrate the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year. Students can take this opportunity to receive school supplies that have been donated by community and corporate participants.

“It is vital to ensure that everyone has the materials they need to fully participate in their education,” stated Senator Munoz. “I would like to encourage every student to attend. These festivals can help to provide what is needed on the first day of school. Supplies, uniforms and health exams will be available to students and families attending the events.”

For most CPS students, the first day of school is Tuesday, September 8. However, for the increasing number of young people who attend the school system’s year-round schools – 20 percent of total enrollment – classes begin next Tuesday, August 10.

These three back-to-school festivals will be held at:

Austin Festival Columbus Park Saturday, July 31, 2010 (11am-3pm)

Englewood Festival Ogden Park Friday, August 6, 2010 (10am-2pm)

Logan Square Festival Humboldt Park Saturday, August 28, 2010 (11am-3pm)

This Is ME honored by Women Helping Others Foundation

In its 10th year of providing programs to girls on the Northwest side of Chicago, This Is ME receives a grant from the W.H.O. Foundation for Logan Square Education Initiative.

CHICAGO, IL – On June 7, 2010, This Is ME, Inc. was presented with a grant from the Women Helping Others foundation to fund their Logan Square Education Initiative. The presentation was held at the Elmhurst Healthcare Center in Elmhurst, IL, and was attended by BeautiControl consultants, W.H.O. Foundation representatives, and This Is ME staff and members of the Board of Directors.
This Is ME is committed to bringing free educational opportunities to girls in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood. The funds from the grant will be used for This Is ME’s current educational offerings at the Logan Square Library, in addition to a new 12-week Science Workshop scheduled for the fall. Jennifer Zimmerman, a BeautiControl consultant and owner of Bella’s Spa & Glamour Salon says, “As a HUGE believer in Heather Sattler and the work that THIS IS ME has accomplished over the last 10 years, I am touched and eternally grateful to the W.H.O. Foundation for awarding this generous grant to This is ME, Inc. I am proud to support each of these incredible organizations who give women, children and adolescent girls the freedom and opportunity to dream WONDERFUL dreams, accomplish AMAZING goals and inspire others to do the same.”

The programming components that make up the Logan Square Education Initiative are 1) a monthly Drop-In Program for girls ages 10-15, allowing them to explore the world around them, learn life skills, and express their own individuality, 2) a 6-Week Exploration Series to introduce girls to new ideas and opportunities, and 3) This Is ME Workshops where girls can pursue specific subject areas in more depth.

Heather Sattler, This Is ME Founder and Executive Director says, “We were ecstatic to hear about the grant award. As a smaller, volunteer-run, gender-specific organization, securing funding can be extremely difficult. We thought that the W.H.O. Foundation would be a perfect funder to align with given our similar missions to empower women and girls and we are so proud that they felt the same.”

During the last school year, This Is ME served 140 girls through 15 programming components and field trips. Since its creation 10 years ago, the organization has served more than 660 girls. Ms. Sattler explained, “We want every girl to realize that she is her own greatest resource. She has her own set of talents that are very valuable even if – or maybe even because – they are different from everyone else around her. We help girls thrive by providing opportunities that promote esteem, expression, and enrichment.”

This Is ME fosters substance in the world of adolescent and teen girls through programs designed for the “whole girl.” With the guidance of exceptional women, girls have the opportunity to explore their individual strengths and learn to sustain positive relationships in a supportive, creative, and open environment. Haitian Relief Update

As you may know, This Is ME is in the planning stages of developing Sa Se Mwen – a chapter of This Is ME in Haiti .  We, like everyone who has heard, are heartsick over the destruction and loss of life caused by the earthquake in Port-au-Prince on January 12.  As you can imagine, communication has been nearly impossible, medical needs are great, and there is overall chaos.

If you are looking to directly support the clean up and rescue efforts, you may donate to The Haitian Project in the following ways:

1. Go to www.haitianproject.org and click on donate.  Under "Dedication of Gift," please write Mary Jo Dunne / This Is ME so that we can share with them how to use the gift.

2. Send a check made payable to The Haitian Project directly to PO Box 6891 , Providence , RI 02940 .  Please write Mary Jo Dunne / This Is ME in the memo line.  We are not looking for credit for the donation, but it is a way for Mary Jo to direct where the funds should go.  Thank you!
