This Is ME partners with Chicago Playback Company to provide 6th -10th grade girls with unique theater experience
This Is ME and Chicago Playback Company are proud to introduce This Is ME Playback, a unique theater program for girls who will be in 6th to 10th grade next fall.
Current members of This Is ME's empowerment programming for adolescent and teen girls came up with the idea to start a theater program. They wanted to find a way to teach other girls about "women's heritage." The final product of the program will be a play about the lives of women who have made significant contributions to society. The program's broader purpose is twofold: for participants to learn more about themselves by reflecting on the lives of other women and for participants to learn about theater, from lighting to voice projection to directing.
The program will be broken down into two sessions, one from June 18th through August 20th and one from early September until mid-December. Participants may attend the summer session, the fall session, or both. Both sessions will take place at the Portage Park Center for the Arts at 3914 North Menard (1 block south of Irving Park Road, 2 blocks west of Central Avenue). The summer session will meet on Tuesdays from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
This Is ME Playback is a wonderful opportunity for girls to explore theater beyond the traditional school play. As with all of This Is ME's programming, the theater program is girl-led. The girls will be learning about and filling the various roles necessary to produce a performance, including but not limited to script writer, promoter, stage manager, videographer, and actor.
This Is ME is dedicated to helping girls and young women excel by providing them with diverse opportunities and enriching experiences. Since January of 2000, This Is ME has served over 80 girls ages 11 through 14.
The mission of This Is ME reads: This Is ME brings adolescent and teen girls together, with the guidance of concerned women, to discover and explore who they are and what they are capable of accomplishing in light of their individual strengths. This Is ME provides a supportive, creative, and open environment where girls can reflect upon and discuss their achievements and challenges as they grow as women.
