WOMEN WE HONOR

Milena Canonero

Milena Canonero is one of the most honored costume designers in the history of Hollywood. She won three Academy Awards for her work. The last one was for Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette movie. Born in Turin, Italy, Canonero studied art, design history and costume design in Genoa. She then moved to England, where she began working in small theatre and film productions.

Her first major film work as a costume designer was in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971). She worked with Kubrick again in Barry Lyndon (1975), for which she won her first Oscar. Her second win was for Chariots of Fire (1981), directed by Hugh Hudson. She has been nominated six more times for an Academy Award. Each film she worked on carries Canonero's signature, inventive artistry and perfection on every level.
Her costume designs for Francis Ford Coppola's The Cotton Club (1984) and Sydney Pollack's Out of Africa (1985) inspired long lasting world fashion trends.
